About Yanartaş

Çıralı Yanartaş (Where? How to Get There? Entrance Fee 2024)
Çıralı Yanartaş

No one knows exactly when Yanartaş’s fires first ignited, but myth says these flames have burned for centuries. Natural gas rises from deep underground and seeps through fissures; when the gas meets air, these eternal flames appear.

Similar phenomena exist elsewhere in the world, yet Yanartaş is one of the most spectacular. Historically the area was called Chimaera, a name linked to its mythic past.

Where Is Yanartaş?

Yanartaş is located in Antalya Province’s Kemer district. Geographically it sits at the end of Çıralı beach, right where Olympos finishes. While holidaying in Çıralı you can simply follow the shoreline to reach it.

To make it easier we’ve embedded a detailed map below. Check it to see the exact position and best route.

  • ADDRESS: Kuzdere, 07980 Kemer/Antalya
  • MAP: Use the location link.

How to Get to Yanartaş

You can reach Yanartaş on foot or by vehicle. Walking is only practical if you’re staying in Olympos or Çıralı. From Olympos beach it takes 40–50 minutes depending on pace; from Çıralı it’s about 15–20 minutes.

If driving, head toward Çıralı. It’s 82 km from Antalya city centre (about 1.5 hours), roughly 50 minutes from Kemer, and 30–40 minutes from Olympos.

NOTE: The road down to Çıralı is narrow and winding. And of course you wouldn’t drive after drinking, but please—no alcohol behind the wheel on the Olympos/Çıralı roads. One small lapse could be dangerous. Stay safe!

Things to Keep in Mind at Yanartaş

Yanartaş is unique for both its natural beauty and its atmosphere. To enjoy the site comfortably, be prepared for a few challenges. Here are some tips:

  • Carry a strong flashlight—phone lights are often too weak.
  • You must climb stairs from the car park; if it’s hot you’ll sweat, so a spare T‑shirt helps.
  • Bring water—you’ll need it in the heat.
  • Use a backpack so your hands remain free; keep valuables inside.
  • Parts of the path run near steep drops—always walk on the inside edge.
  • It can be crowded in the evening; for a quieter visit aim for 11 p.m.–midnight.
  • Being a natural area, insects are common; long sleeves help against bites.
  • Wear sturdy trainers. Flip‑flops or heels are unsafe on the uneven terrain.

Follow these tips and you’ll explore Yanartaş more safely and comfortably. Enjoy!

The Secret of Yanartaş: The Chimera Legend

The magical flames of Yanartaş are part of both geography and myth. One legend, told here in a fresh way, gives the site deeper meaning:

In ancient Ephyra, King Glaukos had a son named Hipponoes. During a hunt Hipponoes accidentally killed his brother Belleros. Branded “Bellerophontes” (“Belleros‑slayer”), he was exiled and wandered to the palace of Argos. Keen to send him away, the Argos king dispatched him to the Lycian king.

The Lycian king felt pity but devised a plan: he ordered the youth to fight the Chimera—a fearsome beast on Mount Olympos with a lion’s head, goat’s body, serpent’s tail, and flames blazing from its mouth. Bellerophontes had one ally: the winged horse Pegasus.

Dodging each fiery attack, Pegasus soared high while Bellerophontes struck from below. Finally he plunged his spear into the Chimera, burying it deep beneath the earth. Yet the monster’s rage was so fierce that flames still burst from the ground. Thus, as Homer relates, the unquenchable fires of Yanartaş were born.
